Why I Take Packing So Seriously (Our Summer Story)

Our summer probably doesn’t look like the typical family’s. Every year we start by spending the first two weeks at Ability Tree — a camp for adults with special needs where my husband and I lead worship for morning and evening chapel sessions. Our kids have grown up going and now they actually look forward to it every year. It’s one of my favorite parts of our summer.

After camp ends we head down to Florida to spend a few weeks with family — and yes, Disney is always on the agenda. Between packing for camp and then packing for Florida, road trips have basically become our specialty.

Here’s the thing about traveling with three kids six and under: forgetting something isn’t just inconvenient. It’s a whole ordeal. So over the years I’ve developed a packing system that keeps us calm, prepared, and actually able to enjoy the trip.

My love language is lists and spreadsheets. I start prepping my packing checklist weeks — sometimes months — before we leave. That one habit has completely changed how our travel days feel. It’s actually gotten to the point where I’m so prepared that the calm feels a little weird.

I’ve done the “pack the night before” thing.

It always ends the same way:

  • Stressed
  • Snappy
  • Overpacking random things
  • Forgetting essentials

Not fun. I’ve also learned the art of not overpacking. If we’re staying somewhere with laundry access, I pack fewer outfits and wash during the trip. If we can’t do laundry, I plan one outfit per day per child.

For toddlers? I always add one extra backup outfit. Simple rule. Less stress. Knowing your laundry situation ahead of time will change how much you pack.

Master Summer Vacation Packing Categories for Moms

Here’s everything broken down by category. I’ll keep it scannable so you can reference it easily while you’re actually packing.

For Mom & Dad

Before you pack for everyone else, ask yourself:

What are my non-negotiables?
What makes travel smoother for me?

Here’s what’s always on my list:

When mom feels prepared, the whole trip feels calmer.

For Kids

Each child gets their own backpack.

Inside:

  • Refillable water bottle
  • Pre-packed snacks
  • Small toys
  • Blanket (if needed)
  • Spare outfit (especially for flights)

Having their own bag builds independence and lightens your load.

Pro tip: Keep wardrobes capsule-style. When everything matches everything, packing gets easier.

Travel Day Bag Essentials

  • Extra snacks (more than I think we’ll need)
  • Wet wipes
  • Small first aid kit
  • Chargers
  • Backup entertainment

Each child keeps their backpack nearby.

I still keep extra snacks in my bag.
Because moms always need backup snacks.

Beach & Pool Day Add-Ons

If your summer vacation includes pool or beach time, don’t forget:

  • Sunscreen (SPF for everyone)
  • Bug spray
  • Goggles
  • Water shoes
  • Baby powder (removes sand easily!)
  • Extra hair ties
  • Beach towels
  • Sand toys
  • Toiletry pouch for rinsing off

Small preparation = smoother beach days.

Theme Park Add-Ons

Theme park days are magical — unless you forget the essentials.

For warm-weather park days:

  • Portable stroller fans
  • Cooling towels
  • Electrolyte packets
  • Protein snacks or sandwiches
  • Sunscreen
  • Ponchos or umbrellas
  • Small toys (Magna-Tiles, coloring, stickers)
  • Extra clothes for water rides
  • Wet clothing pouch
  • Lightweight first aid kit
  • Fun themed accessories (Disney ears, fanny packs)

Preparation keeps the fun fun.

Travel Supplements & Wellness Essentials

One thing I’ve learned after traveling with kids? Trips are more fun when everyone stays healthy. Changing climates, being at camp, long car rides, airport germs, theme park crowds — it’s a lot on little immune systems.

Here’s what I always pack:

  • Kids’ multivitamins
  • Vitamin C
  • Vitamin D
  • Elderberry syrup or gummies
  • Emergen-C packets
  • Probiotics
  • Small travel pill organizer

I don’t wait until someone starts feeling run down. I try to support everyone proactively, especially during busy travel days.

Frequently Asked Questions

What should moms pack for summer vacation?

Start with the non-negotiables — essentials for yourself, for each child, and for travel day. Then add destination-specific items like beach or theme park add-ons. Use a printed checklist so nothing falls through the cracks.

How do you avoid overpacking for summer vacation with kids?

The biggest game changer for us was confirming laundry access before we pack. If we can do laundry, I pack fewer outfits and wash midway through. If not, one outfit per day per child — plus a backup for toddlers. Capsule wardrobes that mix and match also help a lot.

What are the most important items to pack when traveling with kids?

Snacks, water bottles, a small first aid kit, backup entertainment, and an extra outfit for each child are my non-negotiables. When kids are fed, hydrated, and entertained, travel is so much smoother for everyone.

What should you pack for a beach or pool vacation with kids?

Sunscreen for everyone, water shoes, goggles, beach towels, bug spray, and baby powder for sand removal. Pack two swimsuits per child so one can dry while they wear the other.

How far in advance should I start packing for summer vacation?

I start my checklist 2-4 weeks out and add to it gradually. Starting early means I’m not rushing or forgetting things — and our travel day actually feels calm. Even starting one week out is better than the night before!
