I want to talk about something I feel deeply about — praying for your kids. Not just the quick “God bless them” prayers at bedtime, but truly, intentionally covering your children in prayer. And I want to start with something a little unexpected.
A few nights ago I had the most vivid dream. My son had already had a rough night — his allergies and asthma were flaring up — and in the dream I was holding him in my bed. As I held him, I stretched out my left hand and began praying over a darkness that started to form around us. I rebuked the spirits trying to attack us in the name of Jesus Christ. I pleaded the blood over my son and over our home. And I kept praying until I reached this point where I said firmly: you have no power here. You don’t belong here. Leave in Jesus’ name.
And it left.
I woke up with such a strong sense in my spirit: I need to pray over my kids more. Not from a place of fear — but from a place of authority. Because mama, the enemy is after our children. And our prayers have power.
Why Praying for Your Kids Matters More Than You Know
I’ll be honest with you — for a long time, most of my prayers over my kids came from a place of fear. My brain would spiral into worst-case scenarios. I became so fearful that I wouldn’t leave the house alone with my kids unless my husband was with me. It was debilitating.
It wasn’t until recently that that fear was broken off of me. And I can now say boldly — my prayers have power, and I no longer have to carry fear around like a security blanket. Neither do you.
I know this world feels scary. The things we see on the news, the things happening to families — it’s heavy. But God is in control. He is the one protecting our children from the enemy. And He has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power, love, and a sound mind. We need to be of sound mind when we pray for our kids.
Philippians 4:6-7 became my anchor during my season of fear: “Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.”
That is a promise. He will guard your heart and your mind. And He will guard theirs too.
When we pray for our children we are doing so much more than asking God for things. We are covering them in spiritual protection. We are building a legacy of faith in our homes. We are modeling for them what it looks like to trust God. James 5:16 tells us that the prayer of a righteous person is powerful and effective — and that includes you, mama. Your prayers over your children matter more than you know.
What to Actually Pray for Your Kids
If you’re not sure where to start, here is a simple framework I use. You don’t have to pray all of these every day — just let it guide you when you sit down to pray or when you’re interceding throughout your day.
Their salvation and faith:
This is always first for me. Above everything else, I want my children to know Jesus personally. I pray that their faith grows deep roots and that they develop a genuine love for the Lord — not just because we raised them in it, but because they’ve encountered Him for themselves.
Their character:
I pray for kindness, honesty, courage, self-control, and humility. Proverbs 22:6 tells us to train up a child in the way he should go. Prayer is part of that training. I’m asking God to shape who they are from the inside out.
Their protection:
Physical, emotional, and spiritual protection. I pray a hedge of protection around them every day — at school, at play, in their friendships, in their minds. The world they’re growing up in is different from the one we grew up in, and they need covering.
Their friendships and future:
I pray for the friends who will surround them, the teachers who will shape them, and yes — even their future spouse. I have no idea what their future looks like, but God does. And I know He has a good plan for each of my children.
Their purpose and calling:
God placed something specific inside each of my kids. I don’t know what it is yet — but I pray that He reveals it in His timing and that they have the courage to walk in it.
Wisdom for me as their mom:
I always close by asking God for wisdom in how I parent them. I don’t have it all figured out. But He does — and He promises to give wisdom generously to those who ask.
Simple Ways to Build Prayer Into Your Day
You don’t have to carve out a formal prayer session every day to pray powerfully for your kids. Here are some of the simplest ways I weave prayer into our normal rhythms:
- Pray over them while they sleep — lay your hand on them and speak quietly over their little bodies. There is something sacred about praying over a sleeping child.
- Speak a blessing over them in the morning before they walk out the door or start their day.
- Pray together at the dinner table — we use conversation starters and prayer as part of our family dinnertime rhythm. [Check Out My Post On Dinner Table Conversation Starters For Help!]
- Pray in the car on school drop-off — those few minutes in the car are some of my most consistent prayer times for my kids.
- Keep a simple prayer list on your phone or in a journal — write down specific things you’re believing God for on their behalf.
One of my favorite ideas that I want to start doing: keeping a prayer journal specifically for each child. Writing down every prayer I’ve prayed over them, every scripture I’ve claimed for them, every answered prayer. And giving it to them when they’re older. Can you imagine the gift that would be?
We started praying with our kids at bedtime from birth. At first we prayed over them. Now that they’re a little older, they pray themselves — and it is one of the greatest joys of my life as a mom.
My two-year-old mumbles through his prayers and I can only catch about half of what he’s saying — but I know God hears every word. My three-year-old prays for her friends at school, which melts my heart every single time. And my six-year-old prays for us, for her teacher, for her friends — and hearing her pray makes everything worth it.
We also still pray before every meal. And now my kids are so accustomed to it that if we forget, they’re the ones who say something. That is the legacy of prayer being built in real time.
When You Don’t Have the Words
Some days — honestly a lot of days — I sit down to pray for my kids and the words just don’t come. I’m too tired. Too overwhelmed. Too heavy with the weight of motherhood to form beautiful, eloquent prayers.
And on those days I lean on Romans 8:26: “The Spirit intercedes for us with groans that words cannot express.”
I love this so much. On the days when I have nothing to offer, I just sit quietly with the Lord, think about my child, and ask the Holy Spirit to intercede on my behalf. I don’t have to have it together. I don’t have to know what to say. I just have to show up — and He takes it from there.
God knows your heart, mama. He knows your love for your children even better than you do. And He is moved by the simple, honest, sometimes wordless prayers of a mother who is trying her best.
You don’t have to pray perfectly. You just have to pray.
A Prayer You Can Pray Over Your Kids Tonight
Lord, I come before You tonight and I cover my children in Your presence. Thank You for entrusting them to me — I know they belong to You first.
I pray a hedge of protection around them — physically, emotionally, and spiritually. Guard their minds from fear, their hearts from bitterness, and their spirits from the enemy’s schemes. I rebuke every spirit that does not come from You and I plead the blood of Jesus over my children.
Grow their faith, Lord. Let them know You not just because I told them about You, but because they’ve encountered You for themselves. Give them kind hearts, honest mouths, and courageous spirits. Surround them with good friends and guide their steps — even the ones I can’t see.
And give me wisdom, Lord. To love them well, to lead them gently, and to point them always back to You.
In Jesus’ name, amen.I love you, mamas. Keep praying. Your prayers are more powerful than you know.
